Q Grader Day 5 in Bangkok: Keeping Sensory Decisions Consistent

By Day 5 of the Q Grader course in Bangkok, students were working on a question that continued beyond recognising a single aroma or flavour: could they make those sensory decisions consistently?

After several days of smelling, tasting and comparing, the exercises asked for sustained concentration. Aroma recognition, sensory evaluation, cupping and calibration gave students repeated opportunities to examine their responses and communicate what they perceived.

Some differences were clear; others were subtle. The class recap also acknowledged the influence of expectation. Students needed to trust their perception while remaining willing to question and recheck an evaluation.

Taste, compare, decide, recheck and calibrate. Returning to that process made Day 5 a focused part of the six-day course. Browse the original album below for the work and atmosphere around the cupping table.
