Inside the Q Grader Red Room: Practicing Consistent Evaluation
The red room changes what we notice at the cupping table. In this Q Grader +plus session, students practiced evaluating aroma and taste under red lighting, reducing the influence of differences in the appearance of coffee samples.
We also returned to the preparation behind an evaluation: coffee-to-water ratio, grind size, water quality and temperature, and the timing of breaking, skimming and tasting. The discussion focused on why each step matters and how to treat every sample consistently within the same session.
Preparing and tasting together gave students a chance to connect the procedure with its purpose. The aim was a clearer assessment and useful feedback for the people who work with coffee, from producers and buyers to roasters and baristas. Browse the original red-room practice photographs below.
