Q Grader Final Sensory Exam: Consistency Across the Cup
Updated: Oct 8
The final day of our six-day Q Grader sensory training brought preparation, evaluation and consistency together. Students independently adjusted grind size, brew volume and preparation before evaluating coffees with defects, inconsistencies and uniformity challenges.
For this classroom exercise, we used a combined CVA evaluation form to challenge students to work with descriptive and affective analysis. These require different mental approaches, so the exercise called for careful attention to what was present in the cup and how it was assessed. Identical coffees appeared under different codes, testing consistency. Robusta samples also encouraged students to judge the cup before making assumptions about species.
Six days of practice came together at the cupping table. Preparing, measuring, tasting and comparing gave students a chance to see how steady their evaluations remained under pressure. The original album captures that concentration and the work behind each assessment.
