Judging Philippine Coffee at PCQC 2023

Our team joined the international judging of the Philippine Coffee Quality Competition from 22 to 25 May 2023. Four days of evaluating Arabica and Robusta coffees brought us into close contact with the work of Philippine producers and the wider coffee quality community.

The judging formed part of our broader visit from 21 to 27 May. Natt Muangsiri’s departure update introduced his assignment as an international judge, following his experience tasting Philippine Robusta at World of Coffee Milan in 2022. Our later retrospective named Natt and Natchaya Kitcharoen as the school’s representatives.

Barista & Coffee Academy of Asia reported 138 entries: 43 Arabicas, 92 Robustas and 3 Excelsas. Its May update described 26 coffees progressing to the final cupping table, recognizing the work of the farmers, judges, roasters and green graders behind the evaluation.

In August, we looked back on that experience while sharing the Philippine Coffee Guild’s auction results. The update celebrated the producers behind the coffees, the winning bidders and the work that brought them together.

The Guild reported higher closing bids and total sales than in the previous year. Its original Arabica results graphic preserves the lots, producers and auction details from that moment in Philippine coffee.

Congratulations to the farmers and bidders, and thank you to Barista & Coffee Academy of Asia, CQI, the Philippine Coffee Guild and the project partners. Revisit our retrospective, the judging album and the original event updates below.
