An Unexpected Visit During an Advanced Barista Course in Florence
In June 2013, an advanced barista course was underway at Espresso Academy in Florence when the class received an unexpected visit. In a report published on 23 June, coffee writer and Espresso Academy instructor Gabriele Cortopassi described Francesco Corona’s visit as an extra experience for the participants attending that day.
Corona came with master roaster Marco Cremonese and coffee expert Andrej Godina. The group used the school as a place to test one hot and one cold coffee cocktail that Corona planned to present at the upcoming World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship in Nice. The report says the recipes had to remain confidential under the competition rules, so their ingredients and preparation were not published.
A contemporaneous 2013 SIGEP recap lists Corona as the Italian Coffee in Good Spirits champion. The Florence visit offers a small but vivid view of how professional preparation and classroom learning could meet: participants in an advanced course saw competition work taking place alongside their training. The source does not give the exact day of the visit or name the students.
The original report is linked below. It does not document Corona’s result at the world championship, so this recap makes no claim about his placing in Nice.
